1 YR HANDS-ON CONSERVATORY IN CINEMATOGRAPHY

NYFA’s ONE-YEAR CINEMATOGRAPHY CONSERVATORY is a 10 month, full-time certificate program that focuses on the fundamentals of visual storytelling.
During the hands-on program, students are immersed in the essentials of cinematography, such as lighting, composition, color theory, film and digital techniques, as well as camera movement.

The one-year cinematography course at NYFA includes:
* A balance of classroom academic study on the Craft and History of Cinematography as well as instructor-led workshops (18 over the course of the program, some lasting multiple days and in cooperation with other departments at school) and extensive preparation on cameras & lenses (s16mm, 35mm, ARRI Alexa, SONY, RED, Anamorphic and Spherical Cine Lenses), Grip and Electric (including HMI, LED, Car Rigs, Steadicam and vfx/green screen), Still Photography, Editing and Color Correction.
* Students serve as Director of Photography on 6 personal projects during the course, specifically designed to build a comprehensive and appealing reel by the end of year. Projects are currently shot on 16mm B/W, super16mm color, 35mm color, Sony FS5 + Atomos Inferno RAW recorder, RED Dragon. Allotted shooting time varies up to 5 days for the final capstone film.
* Instruction and critique from award-winning cinematography faculty actively working in the field.
* Experience on set as a director and cinematographer, as well as various roles on classmates' films such as camera assistant, gaffer and key grip.
* Consistent access to state-of-the-art camera systems, sound, and lighting equipment.
* Guest lectures with cinematography industry leaders.
* Basic training in Film Craft, including directing, screenwriting, sound, art direction and producing.
* Students are encouraged to work on Filmmakers’ final films and receive extensive training on networking and creating a reel while preparing for the post-graduation entrance in New York’s film industry.

Students that complete the one-year, non-degree conservatory may apply to have their coursework accepted into one of NYFA's cinematography degree programs.


International students completing the 1 YR Conservatory have the opportunity to apply for an OPT to legally work in the USA for 1 year after graduation.
